WWE Summerslam August 15, 2004
- Summerslam Thoughts By Greg Youncofski, The Wrestle Press. Part of the WWE Summerslam Recap for Sunday, August 15, 2004.
Paul London, Billy Kidman, & Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. The Dudley Boyz - I was very into the match, and I thought it was very energetic. I do like how Paul London is being used, now. Of course I like his ROH matches against people like Michael Shane better, I am hoping for a long-term feud between him and Spike. I did, though, expect it to get at least 12 minutes. ** ½
Matt Hardy vs. Kane - Lita obviously reads this site, since in my RAW Thoughts last week I pointed out how she should be getting bigger. Nonetheless, this match was a joke. I started dozing off during this match up. I thought for a bit that Hardy would win by count out. I turned around for a second and then I heard: "chokeslam." It was over that quick. In a recent commentary, Hardy was talking about how his feud with Kane was a so called "high profile feud." Give me a break! How many people are dieing to know about what's going to happen in this feud? Raise your hand if you care. I thought so. The only thing we people are waiting for is this feud to end, and for HBK to return. I remember when I thought Matt was going to be the "breakout Hardy Boy." He is still young, and could be, but his brother Jeff, who is only back about a full month or two, is already fighting for the TNA title. See you in seven months, Matt. *
Randy Orton Interview - I enjoyed the Cena-Orton interaction. Here is hoping they headline WM 21.
Booker T. vs. John Cena - What I did not enjoy was how quick the first match in the best of five series ended. I was really into this match, but it ended so quickly. Since it was only the first match, I was expecting at least 20 or 25 minutes. **
Batista vs. Edge vs. Chris Jericho - Uh! This was something I expected to be a very solid match. Why didn't this have at least fifteen minutes? Even though it didn't go over nine minutes, it was still alright. We also saw how well Edge is over in his hometown after he won, and I am still upset Christian didn't interfere. I really thought Batista was going to win, but I am very upset because I was 3-0 in my picks up until that point. * ¾
Eddie Guerrero vs. Kurt Angle - It was OK for what it was. The WrestleMania match was far better, and this time they only got thirteen minutes. The only bad thing was you could see them calling spots. I mean, you got Angle and Guerrero, two of the best ring generals in the world, but we can see them calling spots. Terrible, terrible on both men's parts. I know that I have no business yelling at them, but I expect better out of those two. Plus, you had him in a chinlock, so obviously the camera crew would be zooming in on Eddie's face. *** ½
Triple H vs. Eugene - This was exciting, but I thought it was slow at times. I thought that was funny seeing the Toronto fans booing Eugene. I am also starting to believe that Eugene using old finishers is a mistake by WWE. With Austin, you never know when he will come back. I actually thought Triple H was going to lose to the almighty pedigree. I just don't know what is going to happen with this feud now. This was certainly better then their RAW match. *** ½
JBL vs. The Undertaker - This was alright. I did enjoy some of it, but I thought the DQ finish sucked. I was hoping for JBL getting DQ'd so Taker could still have a reason to chase the belt, and it got JBL some actual heel heat. But hey, I know what your saying, but who wants to see Heidenreich vs. Taker? JBL carried his end very, very well. Yes, I used JBL and "carried well" in the same sentence. ** ¾
Randy Orton vs. Chris Benoit - This was an excellent match. Not a classic, but an excellent encounter. Benoit gave Orton a big rub, and Orton carried his end up well, showing that he deserves his push. Wow, I just used three smart mark terms! Watch out Caldwell! Kidding aside, Orton completed his face turn tonight, and looked like a million bucks. Benoit also showed he is still the man. **** ½
Final Thoughts: SummerSlam was sort of disappointing. It gets a solid thumbs in the middle. The main event was match of the night, by far. I went 5-3 on my picks, doing better then both Caldwell's! Now I have to sleep with all my doors and windows locked! I'm just playing, but be sure to check with my RAW Thoughts tomorrow, and please check the great columns by both James and Jordan Caldwell. Those are two guys that put their all in the work, and deserve a whole lot of credit.
